If you’re the lucky owner of an apartment at La Manga Club, or if you often visit the resort, you’re probably familiar with its three golf courses. So today we want to give you a series of practical tips to improve your swing, based on the recommendations of Craig Donnelly, director of the La Manga Club Golf Academy. Ready to excel in the upcoming golf season?
1. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart
One of Craig Donnelly’s first tips is to make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart. While it may seem like a basic detail, posture is critical to achieving that efficient swing. Having your feet in this position gives you a stable base from which to execute, allowing for greater control and balance through the length of your stroke. If your feet are too close together, you will lose stability, which can affect both the accuracy and power of your swing. On the other hand, if they’re too far apart, you’ll limit your body’s mobility, making the swing feel stiff and uncomfortable.
2. Slightly bend your knees
Donnelly’s second tip is to bend your knees slightly. This is key to maintaining balance and allowing full body mobility during the swing. There is no need to bend them excessively, as this could cause you to lean too far forward. Instead, a slight bend will make you feel comfortable and ready to execute a fluid swing. A common mistake is to lock your knees or keep them completely stiff, which prevents effective weight transfer from the back foot to the front foot during the swing. Keep that slight flex at all times, and you will notice how the stability of your swing improves.
3. Bend your body at the hips until your club touches the ground
The third key tip is to lean forward from your hips rather than your back. This detail is important for maintaining an athletic and dynamic stance during the swing. By leaning from the hips, you allow the body to adopt a more natural and balanced position, which contributes to a more controlled swing. A common mistake among beginners is to curve their back when reaching with their club. This not only affects posture and swing, but can put unnecessary strain on your back and increase the risk of injury. Keep your back straight and bend from the hips until your club touches the ground comfortably. This posture will allow you to swing more fluidly and avoid discomfort.
4. Position your body parallel to the direction of the shot
Finally, Donnelly stresses the importance of properly aligning your body with the direction of the shot. Alignment is key to keeping your swing on the desired trajectory. Imagine a line extending from the ball to the target. Your feet, knees, hips and shoulders should be aligned parallel to that line. To make sure your alignment is correct, you can visualize a line on the ground or use an object to help you check that your body is positioned correctly. This will also help you avoid common mistakes, such as opening or closing your body too much during the swing, which can deflect the trajectory of the ball.
Finally, one of the often overlooked aspects of golf is breathing. Maintaining a controlled and steady breathing rhythm will keep you more relaxed and focused during each shot. Just before you swing, take a deep breath and exhale slowly. This small detail can make a big difference in your concentration and performance.
With the support of the experienced professionals you’ll find at the La Manga Club golf academy, and by following these tips, you’ll put yourself on the path to improving your swing and enjoying this sport even more. Don’t forget that the keys are constant practice, proper technique and a lot of patience. Enjoy the learning process and a great day out on the golf course, just a few minutes from your apartment at La Manga Club!
